# Agent Smith: the agentic software factory > Agent Smith is the open source agentic software factory: a ticket goes in, becomes a spec, gets built in sandboxes on your infrastructure, has every acceptance criterion verified, and comes out as a pull request. Every run shows its cost. The chain is ticket → spec → verified pull request, with the spec and every decision recorded in the repository next to the code. Agent Smith is an open source project led by its creator, Holger Leichsenring, who owns its direction and its copyright, and shaped by the teams that use it in production. Contributions are welcome (https://github.com/holgerleichsenring/agent-smith/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md). Companies that need a contract, an SLA or onboarding work with 45level (https://45level.com), the project's professional-services partner. Agent Smith is MIT licensed and runs on your own infrastructure. It reads tickets from Azure DevOps, Jira, GitHub Issues and GitLab Issues, works in Azure Repos, GitHub and GitLab repositories, and calls the AI provider you configure. A run derives specs from the ticket, implements them in sandboxes, checks every acceptance criterion with cited evidence, and opens one pull request per repository. ## Start here - [Website](https://agent-smith.org/): the agentic software factory, from work item to pull request - [Agent Smith on Azure DevOps](https://agent-smith.org/azure-devops): Azure Boards in, Azure Repos out, without a GitHub mirror - [Documentation](https://docs.agent-smith.org/): orientation, install, configuration and reference - [Install](https://docs.agent-smith.org/get-it-running/install/): get the server and dashboard running - [First run](https://docs.agent-smith.org/get-it-running/first-run/): one ticket end to end - [Services](https://agent-smith.org/services): professional services and maintenance contracts, offered through 45level GmbH - [Source code](https://github.com/holgerleichsenring/agent-smith): the repository, releases and issues ## How it works - [Methodology](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/methodology/): specification-first agentic development - [Lifecycle](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/lifecycle/): a run step by step - [The delivery account](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/delivery-account/): how each acceptance criterion is judged and cited - [Work it out](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/work-it-out/): talk a change through with an agent that reads the code, then file it as tickets - [Ticket dependencies](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/ticket-dependencies/): tickets that wait for others to land - [Multi-repo](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/multi-repo/): one ticket, every repo, one pull request each - [Structure limits](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/structure-limits/): measured shape rules a run must keep ## Hosting and configuration - [Where configuration lives](https://docs.agent-smith.org/configure-it/): the config studio and agentsmith.yml - [Docker Compose](https://docs.agent-smith.org/host-it/docker-compose/): single-host deployment - [Kubernetes](https://docs.agent-smith.org/host-it/kubernetes/): cluster deployment - [AI providers](https://docs.agent-smith.org/connect-your-stuff/ai-providers/): which models and how to connect them - [Access control](https://docs.agent-smith.org/reference/security/access-control/): sign-in, roles and permissions ## Reference - [agentsmith.yml reference](https://docs.agent-smith.org/reference/configuration/agentsmith-yml/): every configuration field - [Pipelines](https://docs.agent-smith.org/reference/pipelines/): fix and feature, PR review, security scan, API scan - [Concepts](https://docs.agent-smith.org/reference/concepts/): sandboxes, specs and runs, cost tracking, memory - [Dashboard](https://docs.agent-smith.org/reference/operations/dashboard/): the operator's view of tickets and runs ## Optional - [Built by the method it teaches](https://docs.agent-smith.org/how-it-works/built-by-the-method/): how this repository itself was built, by Holger Leichsenring and one language model - [Governance](https://github.com/holgerleichsenring/agent-smith/blob/main/GOVERNANCE.md): who leads the project and how decisions are made - [Contributing](https://github.com/holgerleichsenring/agent-smith/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md): the spec-first workflow, the spec gate and the sign-off - [Blog](https://codingsoul.org): background and design essays
